STOP!

As Alice fell down the hole into Wonderland, she had no idea what adventures awaited her. Neither did any of us know what to expect as we plunged into the CIDI radio project. “I’m late” said the rabbit, and so were we often late with paying the rent or filling out applications. The Cheshire Cat kept grinning, appearing and disappearing at will. So did some of our volunteers. “Eat me, drink me” and as a result grow bigger or smaller: we’ve had those decisions to make many a time.

At the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, the guests just enjoyed themselves, made a mess of things and moved on to a new seat. We’ve seen that happen. The Queen of Hearts wanted to do away with everyone. Yes, certain people have said bye-bye to CIDI.
How did Alice survive, how can we?

What on earth is Radio Village Hall? A totally new idea, a unique broadcasting concept and project created specifically for the Townships community, right here in Ville de Lac Brome. Radio Communautaire Missisquoi (RCM), with devoted volunteers, has built a performance venue at 305B Knowlton Road in Knowlton (CIDI’s recording studios) ready to be wired to the world, positioned to send out messages of who we are and what we do.

RCM’s radio station, CIDI 99.1 FM with its global web portal www.rcmmedia.org, has been successfully broadcasting and internet streaming Townships life on a daily basis for the past three years. Radio Village Hall will be plugged into this network, feeding even more information about ourselves through press conferences, musical events and live programs to the rest of the world.

“Stop!” is a TV show on Videotron’s community cable network Vox (channel 9) out of Granby, and features young local musicians from the area playing different genres of music.

For the past three years “Stop!”, produced by Radio Communautaire Missisquoi (RCM / CIDI 99.1 FM) in conjunction with Télévision Communautaire de Waterloo, has presented 18 bands to date in a televised battle of the bands. The criteria for becoming a contestant are: the artist has to be an independent artist, perform original compositions and be able to play live in studio in front of TV cameras.

This year, from the beginning of September right up until the third week of December, the producers of “Stop!” will be presenting for the first time the “Stop!” piano competition. The show will feature six classically trained piano students from the area vying for $1, 000 of scholarship prize money for the benefit of furthering their musical education; 1st place $500, 2nd place $350 and 3rd place $150. There will also be a public choice award decided by people who go to Radio Communautaire Missisquoi’s website (www.rcmmedia.org) and place their votes in an online voting booth.

What is it with pop music that attracts our youth? This form of musical expression, ready for the making, is for anyone wishing to embrace a musical instrument, pen and lifestyle, and prepared to take over the unsuspecting student at the click of an Ipod.

Up until now our music industry has been controlled by accountants and lawyers, graduates of the school of thought that anything goes when it comes to making money. Like serpents in the Garden of Eden they are superb salespeople.

Well, we finally held this year’s STOP! show featuring all of the contestants and awarding prizes to the winners this past Sunday. Everyone had a great time, and several of the judges showed up as well. The entire show was recorded live at the Maison de la Culture de Waterloo, and will soon be presented on Canal Vox for your enjoyment. Four awards were handed out to three of the six bands that had participated over the past 8 months in CIDI’s battle of the bands TV series.

A total of six bands were initially chosen from the applicants to participate in the TV presentations, performing their original compositions live in recording studio SEM 1492 for the Stop! Cameras. Six judges (Bryan Singfield, Claude Prud’homme, Hélène Lavoie, Géneviève Hamel, Roger Quirion and Mario Trudel) chose the top three winners (1st, 2nd & 3rd) who were honoured on Sunday evening and given CIDI’s version of a Grammy, a miniature Stop! Sign.
