Fresh out of the sleeve
with Ruth Schweitzer
The first time I met Brian Blain was when I hitch-hiked with Glen Whitehead, a friend of mine, to Hamilton Ontario. “You have to meet this guy my sister knows”, said Whitehead, who knew I was trying to get ahead in the music business. “He works for an ad agency and has a lot of contacts.”
To me, Blain had it made. He drove around in a sports car, had a cool job and listened to all the latest music. He had me listen to Crosby, Stills and Nash’s debut” vinyl” album fresh-out-of-the-sleeve. Wow!
Over the years we became friends, and as I was busy trying to establish Oliver Klaus, he was advancing his career as a songwriter, performer and producer. Finally our careers merged when I invited him to join Oliver Klaus back in the mid-seventies.

Former Brome County News editor creates It Gets Better video
It gets better. That’s not a cliche — it’s the truth, according to Eleanor Brown, a former editor of both the Brome County News and the daily Sherbrooke Record who has written, recorded and posted a video for the It Gets Better campaign. The project aims to reassure bullied gay and lesbian young people that they can survive high school, especially teens living in the Eastern Townships.
“Young people need to know that there are adults and other teens, gay and straight, who will be there for them,” said Brown. “Look around, ask for help. Keep asking for help — because you will find someone who will help you.”

As a child, living in Montreal all winter and coming to the cottage in the Townships each summer, I well remember the Chagnon truck coming by every week. In those days, many mothers would come to the country house in the summer with their children while the fathers remained in the city to work and only arrived on weekends, so all we had in the meantime was the bakery truck and the Chagnon truck during the week. We certainly looked forward to that!
Chagnon Dairy in Waterloo is most definitely a neighbourhood company and community-minded enterprise. Founded by Jacques Chagnon in 1954, and with only four employees at the time, the fledgling business collected milk from local farms and delivered it by horse and buggy house to house.
